Switch to a business account
The first thing you’ll want to do is to switch your account to a biz account on Pinterest. By doing this, you’ll have access to all of the Pinterest analytics and insights, rich pins, extra profile features, and a more professional look!
The best part? It’s completely FREE.
Here’s how to switch from a personal account to a Business account on Pinterest:
- Log in to your account
- Go to pinterest.com/business/create/
- Fill out your business name and website then select a business type
- Click Create account
Claim your website and activate rich pins
After you switch your Pinterest account to a business account, now you can claim your website and activate RICH PINS! Claiming your website ties all of the pins that link to your website to your specific account. So now, users on Pinterest can see your profile clearly at the top whenever they view one of your pins!
Rich Pins tell Pinterest more about what the pin is linked to and makes your content easier to be found in search, on user’s feeds, and in their recommendations.
Read more here on how to apply for rich pins.
Change your profile photo
I always recommend a professional profile photo For Pinterest. This is a great way to clean up your account and make it look more PRO. If you are a lifestyle blogger, a bright photo of yourself works just great! If you are a business with products, I’d recommend a logo for your profile photo!

Add keywords to your profile name
By adding relevant keywords to your profile name, you can increase the likelihood of being found through search results on Pinterest! You can add up to 30 characters in your profile name!
Update your profile description
To further increase your reach, include RELEVANT keywords in your description. To do this, use proper + full sentences in your description to describe who you are, what you sell, or what you’re all about. You can also use a call to action in your profile description to tell users to visit your website, download a freebie, or give them a discount code!

Add a location
In your Pinterest profile, there is the option to add a location to let your users know where you are. This is perfect if you have a physical location or if you’re running a service-based biz like a wedding photographer.
Make sure all of your boards are relevant
One important part of cleaning up your Pinterest account is cleaning up your boards. Now that you’ve converted your personal account into a business account, you won’t need some of the boards you used to have.
We recommend having around 15 relevant boards.
What is considered relevant?
So a relevant board means it’s related in someway to your niche or brand.
For example, if you sell baby blankets, you’ll want to think about all of the boards that make sense with a baby blanket brand. Where do you usually keep a baby blanket? A nursery! So a board titled “Baby Nursery” would be a perfect, relevant board. What about “baby closet organization”? PERFECTION. What about “Jeremiah’s 2nd birthday party ideas”. Not so much. Your dream customer is not going to be searching anything about your son Jeremiah. However, change that board into baby party ideas and you’re good to go!
Add a BRAND board
We always recommend to create a board for your brand. This board will only have your pins. And you’ll want to make sure it’s the first board on your profile! This makes it a lot easier for pinners to find only your content!
Select a category for each board
Another important step of cleaning up your Pinterest account is to choose a category for each board. By choosing the appropriate categories for your boards, you are more likely to appear in search results when someone searches one of those topics!

Choose up to 5 showcase boards
These boards appear as a carousel at the top of your profile. This showcase of boards is perfect for your brand board and your most relevant boards!
Here’s how to select your showcase boards:
- Open your profile settings.
- Under the Edit profile tab, scroll to Featured boards and select
- Select the desired boards from the five drop-down menus.
- Select Save.

Select a feature board for the top of your profile
This feature board appears above your profile picture, name and description. Acting as a sort of header for Pinterest. These pins are not clickable, but it’s purely for aesthetic purposes.
To make your account look more professional and on-brand, select your specific brand board to be the feature here.
To select a feature board, follow these steps:
- In the top right corner of your profile, select the pencil/edit
- From the list, select the desired board.
- Select Done.
Refresh your profile and you should see the new board featured at the top of your profile.
*BRAND NEW FEATURE* Set an image or a video as your profile cover
P.S. This feature isn’t available to all business accounts yet. But definitely check if you have it!
- Click your profile picture at the top of Pinterest
- Select Profile
- Click in the top right corner of your profile cover
- Click Upload image or video
- Choose an image or video
- Crop or pan your image to fit the 16:9 ratio
This is such an awesome feature to really showcase your brand in an amazing way. This will capture your audience, too – as it’s a new feature! Check to see if your account has access to this!
